Much Appreciated

Answer:There Is A Page I Open Often

And Its Opening To The Right Hand Side Of The Window

Please Someone Tell Me How To Resize It Back Into The Middle Again As Its Driving Me Mad

Much Appreciated

Please explain in more detail what is going on because frankly, this doesn’t make any sense

Answer:ok sorry what it is

i had a page loaded then i must of pressed something then suddenly the whole page jumped to the right

and to read anything I have to move the arrow along the bottom of the page all the way across to the left to read the whole page again.

Thats ok but I go to this page 90% of the day and every time i move on in the site it re loads to the right hand side again

oh god i hope im making sence now???

Answer:There Is A Page I Open Often

Please Someone Tell Me How To Resize It Back Into The Middle Again As Its Driving Me Mad

Much Appreciated

Sounds like a poem

Answer:uno i feel like crying not being able to get myself understood

I Have a game I play

I pressed something on the screen

and now its loaded

.>>>>>>>this side like from here on the page and to get it

left again i have to go to the blue line

at the bottom to make it go there

Then once you move it over it stays normal like this

then when you log out then load it returns to

all on the right hand side of the screen

pleaseeeee does someone understand what I have done?

its just one one site????

Answer:I’m guessing you’re talking about this happening in a browser, which you should have stated from the start and is partly why people are confused by your post. What browser and version are you using? What web site is this happening on? It’s possible there’s something going on on the page that scrolls it for you, though not generally the case. Does it happen with another browser?

Answer:Yes its a web page

my friends are using it and on safari and all working fine

So this is some setting i have done wrong

its loading in the side of my screen

no one can give me answers
:(

Answer:You still haven’t told us the web site in question. No Safari setting will do this to a page. You could try clearing the history (in History menu) and cache (in Edit menu) in the browser to see if that helps.

Help with folders please

August 27th, 2010

Quite often, when I open up mu HD, external drive, etc. folder on my desktop, they are sized different. I then have to re-arrange them by kind, date, etc. Anyone know why this happens? I would like to have my folders the same width and height all the time, is this possible?

Answer:I don’t know why it would have them all different sizes. But secondary-click (right-click  ) your Desktop and select ‘Show View Options’. And then use the slider to get them the size that you would like.

I’m pretty sure the OP means that the size of the folder windows are different, not the icons… Maybe they could clarify, though?

Hard Drive Help

Answer:I have my old external hard drive for my windows computer. I just got a mac and I am going to use the same hard drive. Do i have to format my hard drive for a mac or is it fine if i dont? Also do i loose any features or compatibility if i dont format it?

If you are going to use time machine, it will have to be formatted in HFS . HFS is not readable by windows machines though so you will not be able to access any of your files without using a third party applications like MacDrive on your windows machine. If you are just going to be doing miscellaneous backups, and you want both machines to be able to read and write to the drive, Format the drive as FAT32.

Note: FAT32 cannot handle transfers on single files over 4GB. So if you want to be able to transfer single files over 4GB you would have to format the drive as NTFS. To be able to get full read/write support you would have to install ntfs-3g (http://www.ntfs-3g.org/) on the mac.

Help with intel imac

August 27th, 2010

Hi, I have a major problem. Windows XP was started to be installed on a new imac not using boot camp, this was a school teacher. The xp cd got stuck in the dvd drive. I had to pull the computer apart and remove the cd manually. Now I need to reinstall 10.5 whatever I do I cannot get it to boot from the mac cd.

Answer:Have you tried hooking it up to another Mac through target disc mode?

Answer:How was the teacher trying to install Windows? Through Parallels or something? What went wrong? What is the computer doing when you try to boot from the DVD?

Not sure how a botched Parallels install could have messed up the Boot drive. Just tell us everything you know cause I am a little confused on what could have gone wrong… not to mention why you had to pull the computer apart.

That right there has me worried that it just wasn’t put back together correctly.

Answer:Either the drive is broken or a cabling issue. As another poster said, target disk mode.

No parallels used, he just loaded it straight up from an XP Service pack 2 cd, not sure exactly what or how he got that far. I turned up at the school to install some software and was asked to fix this, my knowledge of macs are limited. All cabling is fine. It tries to boot to XP and will not accept disc one of the install disc. I downloaded all the key strokes for macs and no success there. So any advice is greatfully accepted

What happens when you start up the iMac and hold the C key to boot from the CD/DVD drive with the OSX disc inside?

Dock stacks icon

August 27th, 2010

I downloaded a folder icon so i can use it on my dock. I used one that looks different from the usual blue folder:

http://i39.tinypic.com/fa39d2.jpg

When i shut down the computer or restart it goes back to the bland blue folder:

http://i42.tinypic.com/156wk0x.png

My questions is how can i keep the folder that i downloaded?

Answer:I have the same issue, but with only one folder. Changing from Folder to view to Stacks view and back again fixes it, but always reverts to a blank folder on restart.

Answer:yea, i did that, just kinda stinks that it wont stay the way in want it.

Thanks.

Answer:Mine does not do that. Here is what I did, to change the icon of my applications stack.

http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/7240/picture1m.th.jpg (http://img220.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture1m.jpg)

In the Dock, select the folder – Right Click and set the "Display as" to Stack

http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/8193/picture2a.th.jpg (http://img268.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture2a.jpg)

Copy the Icon you want to set as your stack icon and paste it into the Applications folder

http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/6272/picture3ahl.th.jpg (http://img196.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture3ahl.jpg)

Rename the icon file so that it has a space infront of the file name.

For Eg: I have a icon file named "Applications.icns" I renamed it to " Applications.icns"

http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/4376/picture4g.jpg (http://img269.imageshack.us/i/picture4g.jpg/)

Close the appications folder

From dock, right-click on the applications stack and make sure that "Sort by" is set to "NAME"

Using this technique the icons do not automatically default back to the original folder icon :)

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

Answer:cool, that’s working so far, thanks guys for the advice

Answer:cool, that’s working so far, thanks guys for the advice

u r welcome

Answer:I’m not sure how i got it to work, but now the folder icon doesn’t change upon power up or restart. the only thing i did was update to 10.5.7. maybe that fixed the situation.

HTML Editor

August 27th, 2010

As you might already I am new to macbook, and love mine. I just used to use a Context Editor for my web pages, it only works on windows. Is there a Mac version editor, not iweb, that I can build on?

Thanks

L

Answer:Not sure what Context Editor is, but be sure to take a look through the Stickies in the Web Design & Development forum (http://forums.macrumors.com/forumdisplay.php?f=58) as many different apps have been posted there that may meet your needs.

Answer:I found one, it is called Komodo Editor…very easy and cool. And free.

Strange Freeze – Dock, App Switching, and Context Menu died

August 27th, 2010

I just had a strange freeze on my computer at work. For no apparent reason the dock, app/window switching (command-tab/command-~), hot corners, and all context menus simply died. Everything else continued to work just fine, but it was difficult to do much without using the mouse to hide apps in order to get to the one that I needed or to get to the window that I needed. I tried restarting Finder and it didn’t help. I tried restarting but it wouldn’t shutdown. I am running 10.5.7 on an alu iMac (1st gen). Any ideas?

Rewind 24hrs ??

August 27th, 2010

I have an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo (24inch). on 10.4.11

Is there anyway of going back to how it was running 24hrs ago?

Then everything was fine (as always) but i decided to hook up my unlocked 1st gen iphone to OS3. Last night the imac seemed fine and this morning all seemed well. I came home from work and tonight and it seemed to be lagging slow so i though i’d do a restart. It wouldn’t do it so I turned it off via the on/off button. On restart it went straight to iphoto which gave a command to update iphoto to make the thumpnails of better quality. I asked i not to bother just now, but on looking at iphoto i noticed that none of my photos were present. I tried to shut iphoto down, it wouldn’t. I tried to open safari anf after some time it fired up only to shut down unexpectidly. Now all apps hang. It seem that i’ve lost all my photos somewhere and possibly all my music. I can only think this is associated with the iphone update last night.

Is there any way of goping back 24 hrs or can u offer any other assistance please.

Thanks
:( :(:(

It may only be an apple thing as firefox is responsive

Answer:Do you have Time Machine installed and working?

Without a working backup like TM, your answer is "no"

Woof, Woof – Dawg http://homepage.mac.com/k.j.vinson/pawprint.gif

Answer:That is what Time Machine is for. It sounds like you aren’t using it and don’t have any backups.

In the same portion of the forum (it too is also on the first page) there is this thread:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=488295

Answer:No, i dont have time machine. I just wondered if like windows xp you can go back to the last update….

My lagging issues here seem to revolve around iphoto and safari (both of which are integral to the conection of an iphone??).

Answer:No, i dont have time machine. I just wondered if like windows xp you can go back to the last update….

My lagging issues here seem to revolve around iphoto and safari (both of which are integral to the conection of an iphone??).

You can try reinstalling those two apps

Woof, Woof – Dawg http://homepage.mac.com/k.j.vinson/pawprint.gif

Answer:Neither Safari nor iPhoto are integral to connecting your iPhone, and while the upgrade to 3.0 on the phone may be part of the problem, I doubt it’s causing the problems with those apps.

What about repairing permissions?

Answer:Even if OS X had that "feature" like XP does, it doesn’t recover lost data files. It just restores system files/settings that were altered. Your photos, music, etc. would all still be gone.

Answer:OK, all my music, tv shows etc are present so that’s some consolation.

Iphoto is so slow and is just showing empty folders right now with the beech ball (the same folders i had in there yesyerday). Can they be restored somehow if they wern’t deleted/damaged? Assuming I can locate them.

Answer:I haved found all the various folders which i can view with preview so again more consolation. When I try adding them to iphoto i get the following message.

The following file could not be imported. (The file is in the iPhoto Libary Folder).

????

Answer:Do you have Time Machine installed and working?

Without a working backup like TM, your answer is "no"

Woof, Woof – Dawg http://homepage.mac.com/k.j.vinson/pawprint.gif

I don’t think Time Machine was available in OS 10.4.11

Answer:Perhaps iPhoto (thinks it) has lost the link to your iPhoto Library.

In Users/[user]/Pictures, do you have a folder named "iPhoto Library"? And if so, does it contain a folder called "Originals"? This is the default location, and where OS X would normally put imported photos.

Answer:I think the poster is referring to a program like Norton’s GoBack where you can go back in time before you screwed something up. I’ve had it on my windows computers and it worked great. Even if you uninstalled a program you would be able to "go back"/ revert the computer like it was before you uninstalled it.

Can I use Canon ScanFront 220P with an iMac?

August 27th, 2010

Hi.

I have recently convinced my dad to switch to macs. He has now bought an iMac and a macbook air so I am helping him set them up.

He works a lot from home so he uses a scanner called Canon ScanFront 220P, here is a link: http://en.kioskea.net/guide/1010692-canon-scanfront-220p

I cannot find a driver so I can install it. I have never used a scanner like this myself so I’m kinda clueless now :)

Maybe someone on here could help me?

Thanks so much

Lisa

I am in Canada and it don’t show up on that site either :(

Did you DL the Mac version:confused:

Answer:Yeh I think so anyway :) I think I just need to change the settings on the actual scanner..

I have to put in the host name or something for a shared folder. But I dont know how to find the komputer "name" if you understand? For the last one the PC name was something along the lines of ACER8787987987/folder.

Does anyone know how to share a folder with mac and get an address similar to that?

You shouldn’t have to do that. Go in your system preferences and delete all the stuff under your printers that refer to the scanner. Reboot. Reinstall the file for the scanner. It would have a .dmg at the end of the file. See if that works. Like I said I live in Canada and I have to DL my Canon files from there US site.

Answer:Nothing in my system refers to the scanner, it is connected only with an ethernet cable, so it has to scan via internet and to the iMac.. But I dont know to set it up.

Anyone? :)

You have to install the drivers that you downloaded from Canon…

Answer:Okay I am trying to download again now. It said on the site that I need Stuffit Expander so I’ve downloaded that as well. The only software file I can find though is a .bin file.

Fingers crossed it works :)

Just to verify, are you downloading Mac drivers or windows? I might be wrong but I don’t think there are .bin files on a Mac.

EDIT:
Just checked, you are right there are .bin files for the Mac and it does say that you need Stuffit. I find that strange because when I DLed drivers for my MP830 All-In-One they were in the .dmg format. Good luck

Downgrade 10.6 to 10.5

August 27th, 2010

I upgraded from OS X 10.5 to the WWDC ‘09 Developer Build of 10.6, but find it too buggy for my everyday use. I wanted to know what is the best way to go back to 10.5. I want to essentially "downgrade" as I do not have time to go a full installation of 10.5. Do I just boot from my 10.5 disc and install it as if I was doing it as an upgrade? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Not sure if you can, but that’s your own fault for downloading something that would obviously be buggy.

Answer:Not sure if you can, but that’s your own fault for downloading something that would obviously be buggy.

What good is giving out a developers build if no one is going to install it. You don’t need to treat him bad for installing something to test.

To OP:

A clean install with a leopard disc would work.

THanks a lot. I guess I’ll just do a clean install.

Answer:What good is giving out a developers build if no one is going to install it.

I don’t think that Apple advises people to use pre-release software as their primarily, day to day product. At least thats what Apple has always told me in the past.

Answer:I don’t think that Apple advises people to use pre-release software as their primarily, day to day product. At least thats what Apple has always told me in the past.

I am well aware of the risks involved when installing developer build software. I’ve done the same thing when 10.5 first came out, as well as iPhone beta software. So I know what I am doing. I am certainly not an amateur in this sense as I planned on going back to 10.5 all along. I was simply asking if there was a way to do it by avoiding a clean install. I was planning on doing a clean install anyway at some point, just didn’t have time to do it right now.

Answer:Umm, hence the name, DEVELOPERS build. So obviously Apple only wants DEVELOPERS to download it.

Answer:Have you tried the Apple Developers’ Forum?

Is there any way to create a virtual optical disc drive in OS X?

So if, for example, I went to burn a CD in iTunes (or whatever) it would "see" an external CD/DVD drive that wasn’t really there. The output would be an ISO file or something.

Answer:I know if you have Toast Titanium can create virtual discs, not sure if it does what you want though, it should.

Answer:I know if you have Toast Titanium can create virtual discs, not sure if it does what you want though, it should.

AFAIK you can make disc images with Toast, but it won’t create a ‘drive’ that the rest if the OS can ’see’ and burn to.

Macbook Pro Rejects All Discs….

August 27th, 2010

I’ve had my Macbook Pro (2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo) for about a year, and it has just started doing something a bit weird. It spits out any disc I put into it. It just churns it around for about 30 seconds and ejects it.

I’ve tried loads of different discs, even the install discs that came with the Macbook… Any ideas?

Thanks!

Nope… I was hoping it would be something simple. It never is though… I just had to have my graphics card replaced last month, too…

Aperture

August 27th, 2010

Hi, please help,

I have bought Aperture and my machine got stolen. On reloading and trying to install it on my new machine it keeps asking for my serial number. When entering the one on the box that I previously installed, it does not want to take it. Can’t get into Aperture at all.

Thanks

Chris

Answer:I’m sorry to hear about your computer.

Aperture doesn’t do online verification as far as I know, so it should work to install on your new machine. I’d call Apple and ask what’s up.

Answer:That does not make any sense, as I have successfully installed on different machines without any complaints from the machines…Check the number again.

Macbook unable to detect iPhone

August 27th, 2010

Hi all

I have a Macbook and I just bought an iPhone 3G and it seems my mac is totally not responding to my iPhone.

I have the latest updates but to no avail

I also have also just loaded intego virusbarrier 5. I heard that it is interfering with the sync of both devices. So how do resolve this problem without having to erase and re-install my harddisk

Thanks

Les

Answer:I’d uninstall that virus nonsense. You don’t need it. It will cause you more problems than anything else and could be causing your issue now.

I’ve seen AV programs grab ipods/iphones on windows before, causing them to not show up, so your suspicions are not w/o merrit that it could be the source of your issue.

Also try a different USB cable/USB port as well. You may want to ensure your dock connector is ok as well.

Answer:Make sure your computer meets these (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1323) minimum requirements.

Answer:Try disabling the real time scanner in Intego Virus scan and see if that helps before doing a complete uninstall.

iMac Boot Camp Grey Screen

August 27th, 2010

I’ve googled this and looked here, and while there are many similar stories none are exactly the same as mine so I thought I’d post here.

So, I was going to install the Windows 7 RC on a 2006 iMac intel Core Duo, which has a dead optical drive, so I was planning on using an external like I do for everything on this machine. After the restart to install Windows, I got a folder with a question mark, and figured that the iMac couldn’t do the installation from an external drive but since it was looking for a disk got confused.

I then hit the power button thinking that I’d just boot back into OS X until I found a solution, but when I hit the power again I got not even an inquisitive folder. Just a grey screen. I tried key combinations but nothing even seemed to get recognized. For example, the PRAM re-set combination did not get to a second chime, just the one chime and the grey screen. Command C did make the external drive spin (with an OS X disk in it) but nothing other then that. And Command D with the original install disk in did spin as well, but I got no further then that chime and grey screen I got every time.

I don’t expect miracles of course, and I want to know how to fix this. This machine is out of warrantee, and if it needs an actual hardware repair I’d rather find out what it needs and do it myself then have someone else do it. I know I can, and it is cheaper that way. And of course if there is a simple software fix I’d much prefer that.

Thanks in advance,

Trevor

Answer:Can you not simply disconnect the external hard drive and boot holding option to bring up the startup manager and re-select the internal drive?

Answer:Can you not simply disconnect the external hard drive and boot holding option to bring up the startup manager and re-select the internal drive?

It’s an external optical drive, and it won’t recognize any key combination including holding option.

So do can you not boot into leopard at all? Try holding the option/alt key after the chime on startup and select your leopard partition disk when the disks show up

EDIT: Nevermind i just read your above post, im not really sure. Wait until someone else sees this thread and maybe offers a solution

this is really pissing me off now, i tried to boot into firewire target disk mode to look at the hard drive on another machine, and even that didn’t work.

How to match up a huge amount of files with their backup copies?

August 27th, 2010

HI

I’m hoping theres something better than me having to crawl through a huge number of files and folders in order for me to know what I can toss off of one hd because I have another copy on another hd that I want to keep.

Everything I accumulated and want to keep, I’ve saved on one hd and put a backup on another drive. But now I’m trying to consolidate some things and toss other things as well as a lot of new stuff I have yet to backup so its getting mixed up.
So I have a ton of crap and I’m trying to make sure I’m not trashing anything I want by mistake. So I’m finding I have to open multiple windows of my hard drives and go through hundreds of files, one by one, to see if I have a copy on another drive so I can either find the backup copy or if its a single file that I need to make a backup of.

So is there any kind of thing where i can correlated, or match up, a large number of files on one drive in spotlight or something, to the same files on another drive instead of doing it one dam file at at time?

Thanks

Answer:Are they in the same folder structure or just all over the place?

Answer:something like this…

I might have a folder with hundreds of files that were backed up onto another hd but backed up and sorted into a bunch of folders with regards to category. Then along the way, I may have added more files into that first ‘hundreds of files’ folder that I need to find out….is this a file I already made a backup copy…or is a newer file that I need to make a backup copy.

If it was a matter of, say, two folders, and one folder had 200 items and the other folder had 215 items…well then I know 15 of those files are new ones that need backing up and the other 200 I backed up previously.

Then I could probably drop one pile onto another and get it to not replace my backups while providing me with a second copy of the new ones..

but it ain’t that easy, I’m having to look one by on, what I have in one folder and if its backed up somewhere among multiple folders on the backup drive.

So I was hoping there was a way I could, say, select 200 files in one folder and somehow select the files in other folders and find all the matching ones which might then tell me which of those 15 ‘extra’ files are outstanding.

Magic, right? lol

I mean, theres tons of things the OS can do that I have absolutely no idea of.

Because right now I’m having multiple folder windows open of all the items in question, viewing them in alphabetical order, and going….’aardvarks and the women who love them’….then looking in all the other folders for it…..and if I got the backup copy already, great…if not, then I make one….or trash an unnecessary third copy I might find on another drive to free up more space. And one at at time is going to take forever.

Answer:now that I slept on it, instead of trying those long winded ways to desrcribe my problem…why don’t I just say the solution I’m looking for

Will spotlight (or whatever) let me select multiple items to search for at one time? There, one bloody sentence LOL

Grey question mark folder

August 27th, 2010

So i’ve been told the hard drive is fried so I get the restore disks and try that well i’m in the middle of the restore and it says select destination well I go to select the destination and there is no hard drive there. SO i’m guessing it’s fried and needs to be replaced?

Answer:If the drive isn’t showing up as a destination for the installer it’s probably dead.

Answer:Agreed. You could check Disk Utility to see what it says, but I think you’re SOL. In the installer, go to Utilities -> Disk Utility.

Answer:So I guess buy a new Hard Drive? I’m going to the apple store tomorrow to see what they will say.

Answer:I’d give Disk Utility a try first. If nothing shows up in there then it’s really hosed and not just some filesystem/partition problem.

Answer:means the HDD cant find the file i think.

Answer:I’d give Disk Utility a try first. If nothing shows up in there then it’s really hosed and not just some filesystem/partition problem.

How do I do this stuff lol I’ve never had a situation like this so i’m not sure what to do.

Answer:In the installer, go to Utilities -> Disk Utility.

^

Answer:Great news guys! I went to the apple store made an appointment. I told him my situation and he said with the situation I had about the hard drive. They were going to replace it for free! So I left it at the apple store and they are going to fix it by the end of today to the end of Saturday. I’m glad they are fixing it for free since I was out of warranty too.

Answer:Fantastic! Glad to hear it.

Remove a blank partition

August 27th, 2010

Hello,

I’m trying to remove a partition i erased, and recover the space to my Macintosh HD. I follow the directions on the screen, but it doesn’t seem to work any tips?

Answer:If you have free space on the disk, you should be able to click on the Macintosh HD partition, and you should see the lines in the right corner like are seen on windows, and you should be able to drag it down to cover the free space, then hit apply. That doesn’t happen for you?

Answer:no it’s not that’s what’s wierd

Answer:boot from the install disk and delete it there, then repartition the drive so it’s all one.

Answer:The restore discs?

Answer:The restore discs?

yes’m. or any Mac OS X install disk

Answer:Thanks I’ll try that tomorrow bed time now.

Answer:I tried to put in my Mac OS X Install DVD and restarted. Then I only saw the normal options as if I wanted to reformat the whole machine. Can you please give me more specific directions.

Once everything gets going it will want to take you through the install process. DON’T. Instead go up to Utilities (I think) and scroll down to Disk Utility. Then it will start up the disk utility, just like in Leopard. Then rid yourself of that blank space.

Partitioning external HD

August 27th, 2010

Hey all-

I have an external HDD divided into three partitions, Time Machine, Storage, and Windows Storage. The thing is, I really never use the Windows storage partition and could use the space elsewhere. I need to delete that and add the space to the other two. The problem is, I have my TM backups on the other partition and the other partition holds non-backed up data that I would prefer to keep, so I can’t wipe and do it again.

Any help from the ever smart Macrumor’s populace? I can do it either on my 10.5.7 Leopard or from bootcamp’d Windows 7.

Transfer files from PC to MacBook Pro

August 27th, 2010

I have a basic PC with XP and I am getting a MBP 13" tomorrow.

I have an external hard drive… Can I just put the stuff onto it (only like 40gb) and then transfer it to the Mac easily?

Or is it complicated…?

I don’t care about being able to use it back and forth regularly. I just want a one time transfer.

Thanks!

No it is not complicated. Make sure the external drive is formatted in NTFS before you put the files onto it though, If you make it FAT32 you can’t copy files over 4GB. The file system just can’t handle it for some reason. If you only want a one time transfer then it is very simple. Just manually drag the files over to where you want them to go on your new mac.

Answer:If it’s formatted as FAT32, then there is no problem, but it can only hold single files that are no greater than 4GB in size. Groups of files totaling more than 4GB is alright, as long as no individual file exceeds 4GB.

If it is formatted NTFS, you will need some programs called MacFUSE & NTFS 3G installed on your mac to allow it to write to an NTFS volume.

Of course you can still READ from it without the third party support, so copying files from it to the mac shouldn’t be a problem, you just can’t edit, or change anything without the MacFUSE/NTFS 3G

In windows, right click, and select "Properties" to check the file system.

Answer:Here (http://www.ntfs-3g.org/) is the link to the ntfs-3g driver. This automatically installs macfuse as well. I use this to write to my bootcamp partition directly so I don’t have to hassle with putting files on a usb and then booting into windows and copying them.

Can people track your mac?

August 27th, 2010

I was wondering if people can track your mac, or hack it or find out where you live. Say if I post in a public forum?

Answer:By IP address based on location, yes.

Answer:If they have the appropriate resources, knowledge, and desire, then yes. Most don’t though.

Accidentally deleted a file, don’t know what I deleted please help!

August 27th, 2010

OK, so I noticed today there was a carpet missing on my HD window, it only says…

Applications

Users

System

Library

What could I have deleted? I already emptied the trash…

Software like LimeWire is not running what could’ve happened?

Answer:Those are normally the only directories visible on the root of the drive, plus /Developer if you have Xcode installed. It’s possible that a normally-hidden system directory like /usr or /etc appeared previously but is gone again now. I wouldn’t worry.

Answer:Any idea why Limewire isn’t running? I’ve installed it again but still it bounces off the dock…

Answer:When you say software "like" LimeWire, what applications exactly are you talking about?

Answer:Just Limewire…

Answer:Archive and install the OS again if apps aren’t running.

Answer:Just Limewire…

Force 5GHz over 2.4GHz

August 27th, 2010

I have one SSID that is broadcasted over 2.4 and 5GHz.; 2.4GHz supports B/G and N; the 5GHz supports A and N. Since it is the same SSID, the Mac has a choice of which band and which standard to pick from. Does anyone know how OS X handles which band and which standard to use? If I reboot the same machine, it can decide on a different band and even then it may not pick N over B/G or N over A. Ideally I would like to have 5GHz picked over the 2.4GHz and then have it use N if available. It seems that Apple hasn’t provided this capability within OS X.

Anyone have any suggestions or hacks to try?

Answer:I’m pretty sure it picks the spectrums that allows for the most bandwidth, which would be N.

A good way to test this is pressing the option key while you press the Airport Menu.

Answer:Thanks for the reply. That is just it, it doesn’t.

N is supported on both 2.4 and 5GHz. It will switch back and forth; reboot the machine, disable and then enable Airport and it can choose a different band. I have also seen it pick G over N. It is the same AP with two radios and all standards are there or they are not.

I’m just trying to figure out why it likes 2.4GHz over 5GHz at times and other times it likes 5GHz over 2.4GHz and then why it picks one standard over another.

Answer:Anyone else?

pop up saying (picture of stop sign and !) IP Configuration, can only click ok.

August 27th, 2010

what is this?
This popped up a week or two ago like 8 times, and then again today.

p.s. if anyone thinks its a bad idea to post those second set of numbers and letters, please say so.

Answer:It’s an IP conflict on your network.

How many computers do you have connected to your router?

Is it Wireless?

Is there security?

From the message, it just means some other computer is trying to use the same IP.

Answer:ohhhh, ya two others connected wireless, mines connected through cable.
ya there is security, well like password.

so its nothing?
can i fix it? or the other computer?

Answer:Try rebooting the router. Sometimes it will hold on to an address too long.

Answer:If you didn’t set up static IPs, then it’s using DHCP to assign IP addresses. Sometimes it may hold on to one, or not update (it should refresh and lease new IPs to each computer).

As the above post says, try rebooting, that may fix the problem as it will have to re-assign IPs to all connected devices as it restarts.

Answer:And you don’t need to black out those numbers. :)

192.168.0.xxx are internal network IPs.

Answer:And you don’t need to black out those numbers. :)

ya i wasn’t sure. can never be to careful when posting things like that, especially if you don’t know.

Thanks guys.
I appriciate it.

how is the title of this thread anyway?
i always try and put the whole problem in there, i can’t stand when people say "i need help", or "i gone busted my internet we are all going to die" or "HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP NOWWWWWWWWWW".

Answer:The title is fine, I knew exactly what the first post was going to be from a mile away ;)

If you get this again, I recommend going to System Preferences>Network and setting your IP addresses to manual ones so they never conflict. It makes it a lot easier if your router is a little eccentric. If you need to do this do post again and I’m sure we can offer some help (it only takes a couple of minutes).

Answer:ya i wasn’t sure. can never be to careful when posting things like that, especially if you don’t know.

Yes, that’s good thinking. I just mentioned it since you asked in your post. :)

iphoto/external HD?

August 27th, 2010

Well, we just purchased our new mac and love it.

My wife and I take TONS of pictures and like to store them on an external HD for storage purposes. Is there a way to designate the photos to import directly to the External HD instead of iphoto? I tried to uncheck the import to iphoto pref… however, when I connect the camera it continues to import directly to iphoto. Thanks!

Answer:nevermind….. I found the solution. It’s under preference "connect camera to" then just select image capture instead of iphoto.

Answer:Hold option (alt) while launching iPhoto and create a new library or choose one already present :)

*edit*

better yet, heres a apple KB article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229

Answer:does that actually house the actual photo on the external HD and just calls it through iphoto???

basically using the space on the ext HD instead of your computer’s HD?

Answer:does that actually house the actual photo on the external HD and just calls it through iphoto???

Your iPhoto library can reside on an external hard drive if you prefer. Just move it there and double-click it to open. iPhoto will open that one from then on.

Answer:Here’s the step-by-step to move the library to an external and use it from there: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iPhoto/7.0/en/6331.html

Answer:ok, I was able to create a new drive path to the external HD. My question now is – where are the photo’s stored via iphoto? Is there a folder for the actual photos that iphoto calls them from? I have about 1000 photos in various folders on the HD and would like to store them in iphoto so they can be organized according to date. Would I import them to iphoto and delete the folders afterwards so I do not have 2 of every photo (1 in a folder AND 1 in iphoto)

Thanks!

Answer:You should end up with a "iPhoto Library" file, this is actually a package, if you right click on it and select show pack contents you’ll see various files and folders, somewhere within is where the images etc. are stored, the file is managed by iPhoto and shouldn’t be modified outside of iPhoto :)

Answer:ok, I was able to create a new drive path to the external HD. My question now is – where are the photo’s stored via iphoto? Is there a folder for the actual photos that iphoto calls them from? This depends on how you have iPhoto setup in Preferences, but you will have at least 2 copies of all photos, One will be the original and another will be a Modified photo ( the one you see in iPhoto). iPhoto will never mess with the Original in case you ever need to revert back to it.
If you import directly from the camera and have a check mark in "Copy items to the iPhoto Library" under the Advanced tab in iPhoto you will only have 2 photos plus a small thumbnail. If you are importing from a folder and this is checked you can delete the folder they were in to save space.
Once you get all the photos you have in folders imported to iPhoto you will want to start getting the new ones you take off the camera. iPhoto makes this easy, just plug your camera up to your Mac with a USB cable and away you go. This is easy but I’m not sure I like the idea for 2 reasons.
1: with the cable between the camera and computer it would be easy to get up to go after coffee and accidently hook that cable and fling the camera or Mac or both across the room. Has Happened.
2: the photos get imported with the name the camera gave them.

I find that by changing in iPhoto Preferences under the General tab "Connecting camera opens: iPhoto" to opens "No application" I can pop the camera’s memory card into a USB card reader and Batch rename the photos on the memory card by dragging the photos from Finder to the dock and dropping on an app called "Name Mangler". Then I import from the SD card to iPhoto.

Imac – It feels slow.:I

August 27th, 2010

I don’t know if it’s my imagination or what, or if I am remembering things wrong, but my Imac(2,8 GHz, 4 Gigs of Ram, 8800 GS) feels kinda slow sometimes.

Imovie 08 is very slow, sometimes during Youtube videos it will stutter for a while. Clicking on a song to play in Itunes sometimes takes 5 seconds to start playing like it needs to think for me to pause it or stop it, and this is without covers being shown. I feel that WoW runs not so good anymore either, but there are some bugs and graphics upgrades since I got it I guess, but still.

When I got the machine I could run countless HD Movies on top of each other other with no stuttering at all. It just seems slower.

Can I do a hardware test by myself to check if everything is up to par?

I did the windows aero test and got 5.7 I think. CPU got the lowest score. Ram and Harddrive was good, so I dont know if those were the problem.

My local mac retailer is very unfriendly, and don’t seem bothered to help. They really couldn’t care less, which is annoying. It’s not apples fault, they are just a mac fan shop that became the official mac chain in my country(Humac).

So I don’t know what to do. I went into disk utility and tried to repair my drives, don’t think it made a difference.

Maybe I am just crazy though… can I do a test in vista to see everything is working? would a 3DMark 06 test give me beneficial results to the power?

or could I have gotten a virus on the mac side?(recently installed Vista. OSX feels more sluggish now).

Answer:or could I have gotten a virus on the mac side?(recently installed Vista. OSX feels more sluggish now).

Not possible.

Answer:Not possible.

ok. do you know anything else I could try?

Answer:Un-install Vista. I’m not saying this as a stab at windows. I’m being serious. I had windows xp installed in boot camp and my iMac became a little sluggish. If you don’t absolutely need it, get rid of it.

Answer:how many programs do you have, how full is your harddrive, how many icons are there on you desktop.

It must render every icon on your desktop, so it will a little little bit to have only few of them.

When your RAM is full, it uses your hard-drive. When you hard-drive is also full it can’t go anywhere and will just wait until there’s room.

I know that at the windows side, more programs make your pc slow. Even though you don’t launch them. This is because the programs load some drivers and such to start faster and such. And I think there are more reasons. Some of them may apply for an iMac too.

p.s. funny, you have the same iMac as I have.

Answer:Run Activity Monitor (it’s on your computer) and see if there is a process that is taking up an unusual amount of resources. Don’t bother with unfriendly retailers, Call Applecare (800-275-2273). They are always patient. Best wishes.

Answer:Google Onyx to run maintenence scripts to do a bit of a clean up, then google monolingual and use it to remove extra languages on all of your mac applications that you don’t need (should clean up around 4GB!) then remove PPC architecture out of all the applications (strips out unecessary code you don’t need).

Answer:try some troubleshooting steps (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=7749969#post7749969) to see if things speed up a bit.

Answer:Look in the logs, using console.app to see if there is something causing an enormous amount of log activity.

If something is really causing a problem, it’ll create huge logs, bog the system down until you go to log in and it hangs.

Might be something that is software (Needing removal/update) or something that didn’t reset right after a system update and may be causing a hardware issue requiring a SMC reset.

Answer:(recently installed Vista. OSX feels more sluggish now).

How did you install Vista? Through BootCamp or VM such as Fusion VMware etc…
